Hokusai cut The Great Wave around 1831 as a woodblock print, which means it was always a printed object rather than a painting. Putting it onto textile is less of a translation than it looks.
Prussian blue
The Great Wave is famous partly because Hokusai had access to imported Prussian blue, a pigment that held far deeper than anything available locally. That specific blue is the anchor of this print and everything else is balanced around it.
The claw of the wave
The foam fingers at the crest are the most recognisable shape in the image. They are positioned on the outer panel at full scale rather than being shrunk to fit.

Hand-lasted upper, bonded sole, overnight cure, individual inspection before boxing.
Final run. This design was produced in a single limited batch and will not be reprinted. Once a size sells out it is gone for good.
