Painted as a gift for a newborn.
Van Gogh made Almond Blossom in February 1890 for his brother Theo's son. It is the gentlest thing he ever painted, and the only one of his major works built around an empty sky rather than a full one.

The sky does the work
That pale turquoise ground occupies most of the canvas, and it is the reason the branches read so clearly. We kept the same proportion on the upper instead of crowding it with more blossom.

Branch structure held intact
The black branches are drawn, not suggested. Printed too soft they turn to grey smoke. The resolution here keeps the edges crisp against the ground.

Handmade in small runs
Lasted, bonded and finished by hand, then cured overnight before inspection.
Final run. This design was produced in a single limited batch and will not be reprinted. Once a size sells out it is gone for good.
